"When you're in a hole, stop digging."
Apparently Ron Wyden doesn't believe in this saying. After teaming up with Randian Paul Ryan to put forth a proposal undermining the universality of Medicare, the subject of two diaries yesterday, Wyden is insisting that the proposal is a win for Democrats because Ryan has backed off his proposal to phase out Medicare totally.
Word to Wyden: Anything that will change Medicare as it was originally conceived and implemented is a loss for Democrats. Putting forth a proposal that would weaken Medicare's financing and make it, essentially voluntary, as opposed to getting rid of it totally, is not a victory. It's merely less of a loss.
Yet the same person who represents the progressive state of Oregon by supporting abolition of the estate tax and supermajority votes for tax increases, is claiming he knows what's best for Medicare. Please Senator, stop digging. And climb out of the hole you've dug for yourself.
